To help publicise this charity event, could you please display the enclosed handbill in a prominent position from the beginning of October? Many thanks. More handbills will be freely available in the Hall in October.
Slight changes are that tutors will start their workshops slightly later at 10.45am. Charges will be 50p for refreshments and only £2 for workshops. A further review of these will take place in time for any major changes to be put to the AGM 2012.
Val Galpin has very kindly put together this year’s programme, which starts on Monday 3rd October with a social morning and showing any summer work. The hall will be open until 4 pm for doing own work, too. Bring an easel, if you like, to better display your sketches and/or finished pieces. Please visit the Programme Page to view and download a copy.
The Committee has to inform you that unfortunately Daphne MacOwan has felt it difficult to continue as Chairman, and has resigned from that post with immediate effect. The Committee wishes to thank her very much for her undoubted enthusiasm and for the commitment and generosity she has demonstrated for the Mannin Art Group for the 21/2 years she held this office.
As Vice Chairman, Mona Clague has stepped in to fill the role of Chairman until the appointment of a new Chairman at the AGM. This will be held on Monday 16th April, 2012. Anyone who wishes to put their name forward, or to propose another member for taking up this post should send in their nominations to be received in writing by the Secretary, Jodie Buckley at least 3 weeks prior to the AGM, ie by week ending 23rd March 2012. The nominee must agree to being nominated, and should be seconded as well.
We will also be looking for a new Treasurer, as sadly, Delia Jackson has decided to step down as Treasurer, in order to pursue personal interests. Mona Clague will also oversee this job until the AGM, and nominations will be accepted for a new Treasurer. Please note that Frank Crompton has reluctantly resigned from the committee after his short spell of participation. Our sincere thanks to you both.
Nominations for new committee members will be warmly welcomed. We have approx 6-7 meetings per year, with the main focus of our energies being the summer exhibition, and it can be seen as an opportunity to have a say in how the Group is run. Please feel free to approach any of the committee in the coming months if you think you might like to join. We already have several willing helpers and they are to be warmly thanked for the hard work they put in, and we do understand that they may not wish to join the committee. Shadows for any of the posts will also help to maintain the smooth running of the Group, so we hope that you will feel encouraged to participate at some level.
The Summer Exhibition – On behalf of all the members and exhibitors, the committee wishes to express a very big thank you to Lindy Preston and Carol Williamson for taking on the organisation of this year’s summer exhibition and without having the big advantage of being ‘shadows’ in 2010. They did a splendid job, and raised the bar on the presentation of Preview Night and throughout the exhibition’s run. Daphne is also to be thanked for her heroic decision to change the screen and room layout – many favourable comments about traffic flow and better viewing were made.
The organizers and committee felt that the Exhibition ran well, with over a thousand visitors to view our artwork (198 exhibits) and forty artists selling one or more pieces. A total income was generated of £10,292 made up from 52 paintings sold (£7790); Handing In (£237); Raffle (£1268); and entry(£997)
At the time of ‘going to press’, the expenses have not been finalized. They will form part of the Treasurer’s Exhibition Report presented at the AGM.
The Exhibition was officially opened by Lieutenant Governor Adam Wood who presented the trophys for 2011. (Below Left) Mannin Art President, Hilary Summerscales hands over the Sir Laurence New Rose Bowl to the Governor to present to Bruno Cavellec for the Best Manx Landscape.
Chairman, Daphne MacOwan praised the Exhibition team for their efforts in producing an exceptional exhibition. Bouquets were presented and a posie for the Governor’s wife – Katie Richardson (Below Right).

Liana Rosa’s commissioned portrait of The Speaker of the House of Keys – Steve Rodin took pride of place on the rear wall of the Hall. The Speaker is seen here with his family by his portrait and also alongside Liana.

The show will juxtapose two contrasting styles - traditional vs. modern - and reveal differences between commissioned and non-commissioned portraiture. The title "Face to Face" reflects the relationship between the painter and the sitter, the sitter and the viewer, and the two artists' work will be facing each other too.

The Mannin Art Group are mourning the loss of their Executive Vice-President Edith Drake. Edith whose works were always signed with her maiden name Edith Maclean died peacefully on Wednesday 16th December at Brookfields Nursing Home in Ramsey. A talented painter Edith had been a member of the Mannin Art Group for over 30 years. She had through the years acted as Chairman, Secretary and took over the task of Treasurer for 13 years.
Edith was a retired commercial artist FSIA who illustrated Harpers and Vogue publications. Her figure drawings of the Paris fashion shows were widely published. Her classes in figure and life drawing along with watercolour have benefited and inspired many in the Mannin Art Group. She will long be remembered with fondness annually when The Edith Drake Trophy for the best Figure Drawing is presented at the Art Group’s AGM.
Pat passed away in Nobles hospital in December after an illness she fought bravely. She will be remembered for her prolific paintings of the Island. Her portrayal of ruined tholtans and misty landscapes were a delight to the eye and highly sought after. Her painting of “Riverside Mill, Peel” was featured in the Mannin Art Group’s 2010 Calendar and two of her paintings were chosen for the Manx National Heritage Exhibition last year. She will be remembered also for her love of wildlife and her years at The Wildlife Park on the Island with her husband Tom, the former Manager of the Park.
